Day 8 of the Torch Relay an emotional experience
The journey of the torch relay for the XVI Pacific Games opened up a new chapter, yesterday, as it made its way through Mapuifagalele Home for the Aged.
This was part of the eighth leg of the torch relay from Fagaloa and finishing at Moata’a.
For Mataafa Elia Autagavaia, the Advisor and Cultural Language Specialist from the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture (MESC) who are leading the relay, the highlight was visiting Mapuifagalele.
“It is always good to be grounded and rooted in prayer, in gearing up for any battle that is the key in what sustains us, the power of prayer,” he said. “It was an emotional experience as we are reminded that every person is important regardless of their situation.”

Mataafa continued: “I had tears in my eyes. It was great to witness the sisters that are looking after our elderly parents at Mapuifagalele. Going there was to let them know they are important in the Games, with their silent prayers in preparation.”
As Samoa prepares to host one of the biggest sporting events in the Pacific, the purpose of the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture was to receive the blessings from each and every one in Samoa before the Games begin on Sunday 7 July with the Opening Ceremony at Apia Park.
Part of Samoan tradition and culture in preparation for any occasion is to receive these blessings before an event starts.
The torch relay was also able to visit the home of the Head of State of Samoa Tuimalealiifano Sualauvi II, at his residence in Vailele, which was the first time the torch baton has travelled to his home.
