Sport Preview: Cricket
Six countries will contest the men’s and women’s cricket competitions at the Samoa 2019 XVI Pacific Games over six days at Faleata Cricket Ovals, beginning on Monday 8 July.
The format is T20 (20 overs for each team) with matches expected to run for up to three hours, including an interval.
The women’s competition will feature Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Vanuatu. Last time out at the Port Moresby 2015 XV Pacific Games, Samoa claimed gold, Papua New Guinea, silver and Fiji, bronze.

However, the PNG women’s team have gone from strength to strength in the past four years, and will be eyeing gold this time.
The men’s event will be contested by New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Vanuatu. At Port Moresby 2015 Vanuatu won gold, Papua New Guinea, silver and Tonga, bronze.
Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu will likely find themselves locked in a battle for gold and silver again, while Samoa, who did not participate last time, will fancy their chances of collecting a medal at this year’s Games.
