The final day of the Torch Relay on Savai'i a once in a lifetime experience

As the host and venue for the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games Boxing, Don Bosco College in Salelologa closed the Savai’i leg of the torch relay for the big island with a whirlwind of celebration.

Salelologa was flooded with green and yellow flags representing the colours of the College. The torch travelled around the town area, before it made its way back to the wharf where the students performed with the event live streamed on Facebook

There was much fire and passion from the students as they witnessed the torch passing by. They all had flags and ribbons and were hitting the road with sticks and branches of trees.

It was a scene that caused people selling their goods in the market and in their offices to leave their seats and run out just to witness the event and people were cheering from on top of their houses.

In the midst of the big crowd, Matamua Iosefa Iosefa, a chief from Salelologa, said having the torch relay in his hometown was an experience he would have never expected in a million years.

“This is a once in a lifetime experience, especially in the frontline of the committee that awaited the welcoming of the torch to Savai’i. With all the events that have happened here, this has been a great response from the people in all the different districts and villages,” he said.

“Being able to be a part of this moment, I will cherish it. Probably, in 20 years the stories about the torch relay in Savai’i will live on amongst our people.”

The people of Savai’i made the most of the torch relay event.

From the east to the west of the island, all the villages came prepared and made their mark as the torch relay passed by. Everyone had the chance to witness this phenomenal experience and many took videos or snapped photos on their phones to capture the moment.

Today, the torch relay resumed from Sala’ilua making its way back to where it all started on Monday, the wharf at Salelologa.

Tomorrow, the torch baton will be returned to Upolu and make its way to Falelatai then to Manono Island as the countdown to the Pacific Games Opening Ceremony continues.
